Window manager for Windows
Yeah, I guess I'll give up on alternatives to Windows if I can replace Windows' default window manager and shell (nohup please?). Why keep on fighting with Linux, X, Gnome and KDE? Mac OS X looks nice but is too expensive in every way imaginable.
Anyways here are some cross platform alternatives I know of:
Cross platform alternatives are all single-language based as they are language runtimes. They are all awkward at dealing with host OS (and they show bias favoring their original host OS).
Staying with X, there are two polar opposite alternatives:
In a few days, I'll get the-latest-and-the-greatest Linux on a fast machine. Maybe this time Gnome will feel faster than Windows on my three year old machine.

- lwm - "There are no icons, no button bars, no icon docks, no root menus, no nothing"
- OEOne- a desktop based on Mozilla

IPA for dict.org?
One of many things that made Plan 9 interesting when it first appeared was its adoption of Unicode by means invention of UTF-8 (by Ken Thompson no less). With IPA fonts, Plan 9 folks at Bell Labs could read Oxford English Dictionary as it was meant to be ie with accurate pronunciation guide.
Even though Plan 9 (and IPA fonts) are now available to outside Bell Labs, OED data and program stayed behind. If only we can turn ugly ASCII pronunciation guide in dict.org to proper IPA?

Total: 1087 processes, 1662 lwps, load averages: 1.93, 1.54, 1.45
Interesting bit is the ratio between the number of processes and LWPs or threads. This is an emperical evidence that shows very few user level interactive apps on Solaris use multithreads. Java and Apache are multithreaded but most apps (including X server and Netscape) are not. Bad news for Sun.
